1. Policy Statement

L Hardy Brickwork Ltd is committed to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all employees, subcontractors, clients, and members of the public who may be affected by our work. We recognise that good health and safety management is essential to the success of our business and the wellbeing of everyone involved.

This policy is reviewed annually and updated to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, and the nature of our work.

2. Our Responsibilities

As a company, we are committed to:

  • Providing a safe working environment on all sites and premises.
  • Ensuring all work complies with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations.
  • Complying with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) on all applicable projects.
  • Providing adequate training, instruction, and supervision for all employees.
  • Maintaining all tools, equipment, and plant in safe working condition.
  • Conducting regular risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) for all work activities.
  • Providing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring its use.

3. Risk Assessment

Before commencing any project, we carry out a thorough risk assessment to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate control measures. Our risk assessments cover:

  • Working at height and scaffolding safety.
  • Manual handling of bricks, blocks, and heavy materials.
  • Use of power tools and cutting equipment.
  • Exposure to dust, cement, and hazardous substances (COSHH).
  • Site access, traffic management, and public safety.
  • Weather conditions and their impact on safe working.

4. Site Safety Standards

On every project, we maintain the following standards:

  • All operatives hold valid CSCS cards appropriate to their role.
  • PPE including hard hats, safety boots, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and eye protection is worn at all times as required.
  • Scaffolding is erected and inspected by competent persons in accordance with current regulations.
  • Sites are kept clean, tidy, and free from unnecessary hazards.
  • Adequate welfare facilities are maintained or arranged on site.
  • All electrical equipment is PAT tested and maintained.

5. Training and Competence

All employees and subcontractors working under our supervision receive appropriate health and safety training. This includes:

  • Site induction for every new project.
  • CSCS card qualification and renewal.
  • Manual handling training.
  • Working at height awareness.
  • First aid training (at least one qualified first aider on every site).
  • Asbestos awareness where applicable.

6. Accident and Incident Reporting

All accidents, incidents, and near misses are recorded and investigated. We comply with RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013) and report all notifiable events to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

We maintain an accident book on every site and review incidents to prevent recurrence.

7. CDM 2015 Compliance

For projects that fall under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, we fulfil our duties as principal contractor or contractor as required. This includes:

  • Preparing and maintaining a construction phase plan.
  • Coordinating with designers, clients, and other contractors on health and safety matters.
  • Ensuring all workers on site are competent and adequately supervised.
  • Providing relevant information to the health and safety file.

8. Environmental Awareness

We are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our work. This includes responsible waste management, recycling of materials where possible, minimising dust and noise pollution, and complying with all relevant environmental regulations.

  • CSCS Certified workforce.
  • Federation of Master Builders member.
  • City & Guilds Gold Qualification in brickwork.
  • Public Liability Insurance.
